TAVR was once reserved for the most severe cases of aortic stenosis, but the minimally invasive procedure is now frequently used as an alternative to open heart surgery.
Once thought to be reserved for the sickest aortic stenosis patients, the minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure is increasingly being used as an alternative to open heart surgery valve replacement.

TAVR/TAVI : Interventional cardiologists gain access to the damaged valve via an artery, usually in the groin. A catheter or tube is used to guide the new valve through the blood vessels to the aortic valve.
The new valve is expanded and pushes the leaflets of the damaged valve aside to take over blood flow regulation. The TAVR valve leaflets open and close with each heartbeat, just like the person’s healthy heart valve.
